What is Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is a condition not recognized or accepted by the medical establishment.
In complementary and alternative medicine it is defined as a deficiency in the functioning of the adrenal glands. Normally, the adrenal glands secrete micro and precise quantities of steroid hormones. Due to their sensitivity, they are created to be extremely responsive to changes in the inner physical and psychological environment.

Too much stress or tension can deplete the adrenals creating a decrease in the output of hormones, especially cortisol. The ability to respond to chronic illness is influenced significantly by the condition of the adrenal glands.

The hormones secreted by the adrenals affect many systems in the organism as well as major physiological processes. The adrenal glands affect the utilization of carbohydrates and fats, conversion of fats and proteins into energy, distribution of stored fat (especially around the cheek and waist), normal glucose metabolism, proper cardiovascular and gastrointestinal function. The protective activity of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant hormones secreted by the adrenals helps to minimize negative and allergic reactions to alcohol, drugs, foods, and environmental allergens and many more. They can affect sex drive as well as weight gain.

Individuals who suffer from adrenal fatigue often appear in good health and display a normal behavior. They do not display signs of a medical illness but in reality they are exhausted. They complain of being tired, without energy and overwhelmed. Coffee, sodas, and other types of stimulants are consumed frequently to keep going during the day.

Even though this condition is mentioned in the alternative medicine literature, only a few supplements for this problem are being offered in the marketplace.

A supplement for this condition should contain adrenal extract (good for suboptimal adrenal function), ashwagandha root (it has remarkable stress-relieving properties), rhodiola rosea root (increases resistance to stress) and ginseng root (reduces stress) among others.
