Alcoholism or alcohol use disorder (AUD) is considered a chronic disease characterized by uncontrolled drinking and preoccupation with alcohol. It is the inability to control drinking due to both physical and emotional dependence on alcohol.

Symptoms include a strong need to use alcohol. People with alcohol use disorder may have problems controlling their drinking, continue to use alcohol even when it causes problems, or have withdrawal symptoms when they rapidly decrease or stop drinking.

Treatment for AUD involves counseling and therapy given by mental health professionals and sometimes medications. Also, some people need detoxification programs to stop drinking safely. Support groups help people stop drinking, manage relapses and cope with necessary lifestyle changes.

Formula AA™ has been formulated with three ingredients used for alcohol withdrawal management.

A famous growing weed in southern United States, kudzu has been used with alcoholic hamsters (one of the few animals to become so besides humans). Studies have shown a decrease interest in hamsters drinking behavior when fed with kudzu extract. Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners generally recommend 3 to 5 grams of root three time per day. Other herbal practitioners also suggest 1 to 3 mL of tincture taken three time a day to reduce alcohol cravings.

Chronic alcohol consumption severely depletes levels of l-glutamine through different mechanisms. L-glutamine can be used to stop alcohol cravings since it can be converted into glucose for the brain without raising insulin levels. This amino acid has been shown to improve brain function in alcoholics, resulting in improved sleep, decreased anxiety, and reduced craving for alcohol.

In order to counteract the harmful effects of alcohol on the liver, milk thistle is commonly recommended. Milk thistle extract has been shown in one double-blind study to reduce death due to alcohol-induced cirrhosis of the liver. Milk thistle extract may protect the cells of the liver by both blocking the entrance of harmful toxins and helping remove these toxins from liver cells. Milk thistle has also been reported to regenerate injured liver cells.
