Kava kava is a member of the pepper family, native to many Pacific Ocean islands. The rhizome and root are the parts used for modern herbal preparations.

A nonalcoholic drink made from the root of kava kava played an important role in social ceremonies in some Pacific islands, including welcoming visiting royalty and at meetings of village elders. Kava kava was valued both for its mellowing effects and for encouraging socializing. It is also noted for initiating a state of contentment, a greater sense of well-being, and enhanced mental acuity, memory, and sensory perception. Kava kava has also been traditionally used by healers in the Pacific Islands as a pain reliever.

Kava kava has been extensively studied for its potential to help relieve anxiety. Research suggests that it may reduce symptoms in individuals with mild to moderate anxiety. In one study, kava kava helped ease anxiety symptoms in menopausal women, while another study found that it enhanced the anti-anxiety effects of hormone replacement therapy.

The kava-lactones, sometimes referred to as kava-pyrones, are the most important active constituents in kava kava extracts. High-quality kava kava rhizomes contain 5.5 to 8.3% kava -lactones. Kava-lactones are believed to have anti-anxiety, mild analgesic, and muscle-relaxing effects.
