Glycine is considered a nonessential amino acid used by the organism to build proteins. It is present in significant amounts in prostate fluid. Glycine may be important in maintaining prostate health. In a study of 45 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), it was found that glycine intake for three months combined with alanine and glutamic acid, effectively promote the reduction of the condition.

Glycine also enhances the activity of chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) in the brain that are involved in memory and cognition.

Glycine is utilized in liver detoxification together with glutathione. In addition, experimental evidence on rats indicates that glycine in conjunction with arginine has a useful role to play in promoting healing after trauma.

Glycine is found in many foods high in protein such as fish, red meat, beans, and dairy.
