Dangers of Abnormally Low Levels of Serotonin

The following are risky conditions produced by low levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin commonly seen in the United States:

• Each year, depression afflicts ten million people or more. In the course of their lifespan, one woman in every four and one man out of ten will develop depression.

• One out of three Americans weighs more than she or he should; many suffer from obesity that dangerously increases their risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other life-threatening illnesses.

• Each year, one third of people experience prolonged periods of sleep disturbance serious enough to disrupt their mental and physical well-being or affect their performance during the day.

• One out of ten people (much more common in women) suffer from devastating pain caused by migraine headaches.

• Over five million Americans (most of them women) drag themselves through their days feeling an overwhelming sense of bone-wearying pain and muscle ache that overwhelms their whole body.

A practical solution to many of these problems could be attained by providing the body with 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). 5-HTP is a natural compound produced by the body from tryptophan and also found in dietary supplements. In Europe, it has been used for decades as an approved treatment for depression, sleep problems, weight loss, and other medical complaints. Always seek advice from your physician before taking any supplement for any of the above-mentioned conditions.
