In test tube studies, cranberry promotes the protection against E. coli, the most common bacterial cause of UTI (urinary tract infections) from adhering to the cells, lining the wall of the bladder. The proanthocyanidins (a type of polyphenol) in the berry have shown this anti-adherence activity.
A small double-blind trial with women ages 18 to 45 years with history of recurrent urinary tract infections found that daily dosages of 400 mg twice daily for three months, drastically improved urinary tract health compared to women taking the placebo.
