Depressil™ is a combination of St. John’s Wort extract, 5-HTP, and six additional and important compounds that promote a state of mental well-being.
St. John’s Wort extract contains hypericin and other dianthrones, flavonoids, xanthones, and hyperforin. Test tube research suggests that this compound may promote antidepressant actions by inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. This action is possibly due to the constituent hyperforin. St. John’s Wort extract is able to support neurotransmission in the brain.
Clinical studies appear to provide increasing evidence for a direct correlation between vitamin D insufficiency and depression. Also, the literature recommends vitamin D to people with clinical depression and vitamin D deficiency.
The Journal of Nutrition suggests that there is a relationship between selenium concentration and signs of depression as well as negative mood among young adults. Young adults with either too low, or too high, levels of selenium showed the highest risk of depressive symptoms and poorer mood. However, lower concentrations of selenium were found to be even more detrimental to these outcomes.
Vervain is known as a calming restorative for debilitated conditions as well as a stimulant for the liver and digestion. It is used by many cultures and for several conditions. Vervain supports the nervous system while promoting relaxation and reducing stress.
Ginkgo biloba is believed to increase blood flow through the arteries and veins in various tissues. A number of small clinical trials have shown that ginkgo may support overall functioning in people with peripheral arterial disease and claudication (pain in calf muscles that people with narrowed or blocked arteries get when walking). Other studies suggest that this compound might relieve mild depression. The mechanism has not been fully understood yet.
L-phenylalanine (LPA) acts as a building block for several proteins that are produced in the body. LPA can be converted to L-tyrosine and subsequently to L-dopa, norepinephrine and epinephrine. LPA can also be converted (through a separate pathway) to phenylethylamine, an important agent that occurs naturally in the brain and promotes mood elevation.
Damiana was originally used by the indigenous cultures of Central America, particularly Mexico. It is considered an aphrodisiac and used for several conditions including neurosis and sexual disorders. Damiana contains numerous small, fragrant substances called terpenes.
