Enzyme Complex
60 Capsules • 575 mg
Enzyme Complex™ is a combination of enzymes to support digestive functions. This product has been formulated to optimize the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins for an effective assimilation.

Amylase helps break down carbohydrates into sugars that the body needs for energy. This digestive enzyme is produced naturally in the body. Low levels of amylase have been linked to a higher risk of metabolic syndrome. By chewing food slowly and thoroughly, salivary amylase released by the mouth is the first step in digesting carbohydrates.

Protease is necessary to break down proteins. The first step in this process takes place in the stomach where pepsin breaks down the proteins that have been swallowed. Once digested, they are sent to your small intestine where they are further broken down by enzymes secreted by the pancreas and small intestine. Protein from lean meats, fish, beans, nuts and low-fat dairy, help ensure that the body gets enough protein without also taking in too much fat.

Lipase is released by the pancreas and is needed to properly digest fats.
When fats reach the small intestine, they are mixed with bile released from the liver. This fluid mixes with the fats and emulsifies them, just as adding vinegar to olive oil emulsifies the oil. This emulsion is necessary to break down the fats into molecules tiny enough for the small intestine to absorb. Too many fat molecules in the blood can clog the arteries and accumulate around the organs, putting a person at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Cellulase is a fiber-breaking enzyme capable of hydrolyzing non-digestable carbohydrates that comprise fiber. The human body does not produce enzymes to breakdown fiber, but instead is at the mercy of enzymes produced by intestinal microorganisms. Even though fiber is an important part of a healthy and balanced diet, it may act as an anti-nutritional agent. Fiber may bind to minerals and other nutrients, blocking their bioavailability and preventing their absorption.

Alpha-galactosidase is a sugar-breaking enzyme that breaks down disaccharides, trisaccharides and oligosaccharides that may cause gastric discomfort or dietary intolerances for some people. These complex or branching sugars are found in legumes (beans, lentils, peanuts) and cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts).
