Black walnut or Juglans nigra (J. nigra) is a deciduous tree known as the eastern black walnut. This tree is indigenous to eastern North America, where it is grown in states such as South Dakota.

Juglone is a natural brown pigment found in walnut trees, with the chemical formula 5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone. Known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, it occurs naturally in various parts of trees in the Juglandaceae family, including the leaves, roots, hulls, and bark.

The outer thick, green layer of the walnut fruit is called the hull. Walnut hulls are a source of phytochemicals and natural compounds with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties that enhance the value of the walnut cultivation. Recently, they have received increasing interest in modern pharmacology due to their powerful antioxidant activity and have been extensively used in traditional medicine for skin conditions, parasites, and pain relief.

Black walnut hulls are known for their ability to support digestive balance. Traditionally, they have been used to help cleanse the digestive tract, reduce unwanted organisms, and promote a healthy gut environment.

Containing high levels of tannins and polyphenols, black walnut hulls protect the body against oxidative stress and promote cellular health. The astringent properties make them a valuable herb for promoting healthy skin. It may help with minor skin irritations and support the body’s natural healing processes.
