Hemorrhoids are enlarged raised veins in the anus or rectum. Common hemorrhoids are often linked to both diarrhea and constipation. The belief that hemorrhoids are caused by constipation has been questioned by some health professionals. Still, the medical community feels that many hemorrhoids are triggered by the straining that accompanies chronic constipation.
Historically, cranesbill was documented as being used by the Blackfoot Indians of North America to promote bleeding control. The roots were used for their astringent properties as well as for diarrhea. Cranesbill is high in tannins, which may account to promote anti-diarrheal activity.
The bark and leaves of witch hazel were used by Native Americans to promote the relief of hemorrhoids and wounds. Tannins and volatile oils are the main active constituents in witch hazel. The constituents contribute to the strong astringent effects. Pharmacological studies have suggested that witch hazel strengthens veins and promotes anti-inflammatory activity.
Horse chestnut has been used by herbalists to promote circulation. The seeds are the source of a saponin known as aescin, which has been shown to promote circulation through the veins. Aescin fosters normal tone in the walls of the veins, thereby promoting return of blood to the heart. Aescin also promotes anti-inflammatory activity.
Butcher’s broom contains steroidal saponins which are probably responsible for the therapeutic activity of this herb. These constituents are reported to promote the strength and tone of the veins. Butcher’s broom may also lead to the constriction of the veins, which helps blood return from the extremities. Clinical trials have confirmed the benefits of combining vitamin C, citrus bioflavonoids, and butcher’s broom for circulatory support.
Curcumin promotes the reduction of inflammation by lowering histamine levels and possibly by increasing production of natural cortisone by the adrenal glands.
Turkey rhubarb is regularly used to detoxify and cleanse the body. The root is utilized for its purgative activity as well as stool softener.
Acacia powder is a good source of insoluble fiber and it is commonly taken to increase fiber consumption and help alleviate constipation.
Clinical studies have shown that vitamin E promotes vascular health and blood circulation.
