Horsetail is widely found throughout temperate climate zones of the Northern Hemisphere, including Asia, North America, and Europe. Horsetail is a unique plant with two distinctive types of stems. One variety of stem grows early in spring and looks like asparagus, except for its brown color and spore-containing cones on top. The mature summer form of the herb has thin, green, branched sterile stems and resembles a feathery trail.

Reportedly first recommended by the Roman physician Galen, horsetail has long been used in traditional medicine for kidney and bladder conditions, as well as joint problems. In addition, topical use of horsetail was traditionally used to stop wound bleeding.

Horsetail is rich in silicic acid and silicates, which provide approximately 2-3% of elemental silicon, potassium, aluminum, and manganese. It also contains fifteen different types of flavonoids. The flavonoids and saponins in horsetail are believed to contribute to its diuretic effects, while its silicon content is thought to help support and strengthen connective tissue. Some experts have suggested that the element silicon in horsetail is also a vital component for bone and cartilage formation. Reports also suggest that horsetail may be of some use to improve brittle nails.
